Materials The selection of raw material from which the size and shape are produced is a function of both the equipment and the formulation. If the formulation is corrosive, media of a stainless steel material may be appropriate. Since corrosion is always a function of a material and its environment, any application should be checked. If the formulation can tolerate no carbon contamination, then type 302 or 316 stainless steel is require. Note that with color sensitive formulations, all steel media will have deleterious effects. The following lists the properties of each raw material available from Hoover Precision Products:
Case-hardened Carbon Steel (AISI 1010/1013)
Surface hardness...............................................
HRC 60min.
Core hardness....................................................
HRC 40 (approx.)
The lowest cost cold-forged media available. High strength. High density. Will cause graying. Not recommended for applications allowing media to wear down below two thirds of its original diameter. Not suited to sizes below 3/32 diameter.
Throught-hardened Carbon Steel (AISI 1060/1065)
Surface hardness...............................................
HRC 60min
Core hardness...................................................
HRC 50min
Especially suited to ball mills or in equipment where the media will be kept in use well below the original diameter. High strength. High density. Will cause graying.
Through-hardened Chrome Steel (AISI 52100)
Hardness...........................................................
HRC 60 - 67
Particularly suited to high speed media mills but applicable to all grinding equipment. High strength. High density. Will cause graying.
Through-hardened Stainless Steel (AISI 440-C)
Hardness..........................................................
HRC 58 - 65
Corrosion resistant in many applications. High strength. High density.
Work-hardened Stainless Steel (AISI 302 or 316)
Hardness..........................................................
HRC 25 - 39
Highly corrosion resistant but wears quickly. Type 316 is generally needed when chlorides are present in the formulation. High strength. High density.
